Platt North Pumpkin Carving Contest

On October 26, Platt College North Students gathered in the Garde Manger kitchen to participate in the Pumpkin Carving Contest. Approximately 10 students participated in the contest, and six prizes were given out. As halloween music played in the background, students worked incredibly hard for two hours to create their masterpiece. The students had a really great time, and they created some really intersting pumpkins!

OKC Happy Hour Women's Networking Luncheon Raises Awareness and Spirits

Today's luncheon at Metro Appliances & More was both informative and uplifting.    Jan Peery from the YWCA, shared information regarding the need for more awareness about the issue of Domestic Violence.  October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month; a fact that is overshadowed by October also being Breast Cancer Awareness Month.  Jan delivered several startling statistics that caused the 20+ women there to pause and think.  I could tell she was passionate about this issue and her words compelled me to want to do more.

Jan Peery, YWCA and Jan Astani, Speaker

After Jan Peery shared her message, Jan Astani delivered an uplifting message that she called the "Be Challenge."  There are 5 challenges in all and Jan asked that we each adopt just one for a period of time and watch how it effected our lives.

The five challenges were:

1. Be an old fashioned communicator-send thank you cards and letters.  Also, put down your electronics at meal times and really connect with the people across from you.

2.  Be a practitioner of the Golden Rule.

3.  Be well informed - Great readers make great leaders.  Read....a lot.

4.  Be grateful!  We all have a L(oved Ones)
                                                  O (Opportunities)
                                         T (Talents)
to be grateful for!

5.  Be open minded to change - here she told a tender story about her
Sister's escape from Domestic Violence.

Several staff from Platt College attended: Verna Alfred, Sarah Batchelor, Pamela Boykin,  Marvene Funnell, Kim Haskett, Jodi Overman, Charity Patton, and Sara Shelton.  Before the speakers, we had a good time meeting other women within our community while we enjoyed a delicious lunch from Jason's Deli.

The event was graciously hosted by Robin Walker and Kim Wigley. Thank you ladies for a wonderful time!

Career Day/Night

Every other month Platt Central's students come proudly dressed in their best interview attire to receive their awards they have worked so hard to earn.  Awards that are presented by each program instructor/coordinator include: Student of the Month, Winners Attitude, Perfect Attendance, Key 95 and Coordinators Honor Roll.  The Director’s Honor Roll is presented by our campus director, Joey Keefer and the Student Services Star Student is presented by the Student Service Director, Charity Patton.  During this month’s career day, the students were given an opportunity to hear about Infant Crisis Services, INC from their Outreach Coordinator, Mrs. Judith Cope and learn not only the services that they provide to babies in our community but how our students can get involved with this organization.

Greater OKC Chamber's "Rise and Shine"
Put a Smile on my Face!

The Holiday Inn The Holiday Inn (Quail Springs Location), hosted the Greater OKC Chamber's "Rise and Shine" event this morning.  The hotels General Manager, William Lawrence, and staff prepared a wonderful continental breakfast and were there to welcome us to the hotel's spacious meeting room.

Jason Pound

Today's MC was Jason Pound, pictured right, with UMB Bank.  Jason challenged us all to introduce ourselves in ten words.  My intro:  Good morning!  I'm the mother of 200 children at Platt College who are all looking for a job!

Lisa Ritchey & George Peary
Key speakers today were Lisa Boevers, Vice President of Membership, Elena Lister, Events Manager, Josh Parsons, Committee Chairperson, and Lisa Ritchey, Member Outreach and Phone Bank committees member.  I've had the pleasure of working with Lisa with George Peary, at the Chamber's monthly phone bank.  The Phone Bank is a wonderful opportunity to reach out to new members of the chamber and welcome them into our community.

Josh Parsons & Christine Soileau

As always, the "Rise and Shine" was an excellent opportunity to network with businesses in our community.  On behalf of Platt College, I was able to connect with Stacy Cantu from Broadway Inn & Suites, John Dinsmore from Hilton Garden Inn, Kaan Camuz from Dove Science Academy, Nance Campbell from Arby's Market Fresh, Connie Root from Walker Companies,  and Michelle Boydston Big Brothers Big Sisters.

Jobs are FALLING Out of the Sky!

We've had some distinguished guests calling in and stopping by this week on the hunt for our fantastic culinarians!  James Kraham, Daniel Crowell, and Jason Hill from The Meat House joined Jodi Ackerman, Platt College's Career and Industry Representative, and me at Chefs di Domani for lunch.  The Meat House, a new Butcher/Boutique concept,  is opening their first Oklahoma location in Edmond later this month.

Also exciting was our trip to see Chef Andrew Murin  at the Chesapeake Arena.  Jodi and I braved the construction zones to visit with the Chef and his staff regarding their upcoming needs for the holiday and concert season.  We enjoyed getting a behind the scenes tour of the new construction, including the new Thunder Suites and restaurant concepts.  We look forward to hearing about all the exciting events our students will help bring to life!

Finally a brand new Mongolian Barbecue concept will be opening in Quail Springs Mall just in time for the Holidays.  HuHot will be the "hottest" place to eat for shoppers this year!  We were honored to have Noah Smith and Brandon Parker visit our campus and wish them all the best in their new business venture.

Massage Therapy Gets Creative

OHA's Massage Therapy students like to take things to the extreme. With one of their first assignments upon returning to class from break was to describe the muscle in the body. It would be easy enough to just point and flex but why be so basic when you can get out the washable marker and go to town on a live canvas? Edward King volunteered to have the other student draw all over his torso so that they could not only name the muscles but locate them and see them in action once they were located. Way to get creative and have fun in the process... that's what we call "Hands-On Training!"
